What does Amanprana Vitamin D2 + Superfood Consommé not contain but Davitamon, Solgar, Metagenics and many others do?
A solution can be bought for every shortfall we suffer from, and that includes a shortfall of vitamins – in this case a vitamin D deficiency. There is a very wide range of options when it comes to getting a vitamin D boost if you cannot get enough from the sun (vitamin D is produced by your skin when it is exposed to sunlight).
Unfortunately, the most common products that people use to top up on vitamin D also contain unhealthy things, such as bulking agents (cellulose, maize starch, maltodextrine), anti-caking agents (stearic acid, silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, carboxymethyl cellulose), glazing agents (hypromellose, glycerol), natural or other colourants, sweeteners (mannitol, xylitol, steviol glycosides), flavourants or fragrance enhancers). Amanprana gives you quality in each and every ingredient, and each one serves its own purpose.
The difference between vitamin D2 and vitamin D3
Vitamin D is actually a hormone that only becomes activated in the body. The two most important types of vitamin D are vitamin D2 (ergosterol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). Vitamin D2 is isolated vitamin D and is made from ergosterol, which is primarily found in plants and fungi. Today vitamin D2 is replaced with synthetic vitamin D3 by many pharmaceutical giants. Vitamin D3 is manufactured in your skin when it is exposed to sunlight and it occurs naturally in a number of foodstuffs. Both types are active. D2 and D3 derived from foodstuffs can both be rapidly absorbed into your bloodstream through your small intestine. Then there are also other metabolites such as such as vitamins D1, D4 and D5 and its analogues such as alfacalcidol.
We list the ingredients of the vitamin D sold by Solgar, Metagenics and Davitamon
Solgar vitamin D
Solgar Vitamin D3 chewable tablets (1 tablet, 25 µg/1000 IU, 500% ADH)
Ingredients: Bulking agents (microcrystalline cellulose, maltodextrine, ethyl cellulose), anti-caking agents (vegetable stearic acid, silicon dioxide, vegetable magnesium stearate), glazing agents (hypromellose, vegetable glycerine), cellulose gum, natural colourants (riboflavin), Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol, from lanolin) (1000 IE)
Even though almost all of the ingredients of Solgar’s vitamin D are natural, they are highly processed and refined. Many ingredients are either not digested or barely digested by the body. Ethyl cellulose, for example, can cause intestinal issues such as constipation, diarrhoea, cramps and wind when taken in high concentrations. That is why it cannot be included in infant formula. It robs your body of energy instead of giving it energy. Moreover, the vitamin D3 contained in Solgar vitamin D is derived from lanolin.
Apart from the fact that this is derived from animals, it can also be harmful as insect repellents are often sprayed on the hides of sheep. When the lanolin is not properly cleaned – which is often the case as the process is expensive – then residues are left behind that could end up in the tablets.
Metagenics vitamin D
Metagenics chewable tablets (1 tablet, 25 µg/1000 IU, 500% ADH)
Ingredients: Sweeteners (mannitol, xylitol, steviol glycosides), anti-caking agents (sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide), flavourants (powdered lime juice, lime flavourant, citric acid), carrier (hydroxypropyl cellulose), flavourant, vitamin D (cholecalciferol).
They contain a large number of bulking agents, ones that require quite some energy to digest. Then there are also ingredients such as magnesium stearate, a trans fat – heated oil that cannot handle being heated and as a result is damaging to your health.
Davitamon vitamin D
Vitamin D for adults, orodispersible tablet (1 a day, 10 mcg, 200% ADH)
Ingredients: Mannitol, corn starch, vitamin D (cholecalciferol: vitamin D3), flavourants, food acid: citric acid, anti-caking agent: magnesium stearate.
What we again see, just like in the vitamin D offered by Solgar and Metagenics, is that there is an abundance of sweeteners. It also contains bulking agents and it is unclear which ‘flavourants’ are used. These tablets again contain magnesium stearate, a liquid additive that after a while could block absorption of foodstuffs by the body.
