Vaseline, a ‘jelly’ substance, by-product of petroleum, taboo in Rudolf!, but is found in Vicks Vaporub
It may sound odd, but during the extraction of petroleum, a number of ‘cosmetic ingredients’ are formed. You most certainly know them by name: Vaseline (on your product label it says 'petrolatum') and paraffin (on your product label: 'paraffinum liquidum'). Such ingredients are commonly categorized under 'mineral oils'. You encounter them in for example Vicks Vaporub as well as in Vicks Vaporub Baby
Mineral oil might sound as healthy as ‘mineral water’, but it absolutely isn’t. When during drilling, the jelly (Vaseline) or the paraffin (occurs during the distillation process in which petroleum is converted into natural gasoline) are obtained, these materials are obviously refined and purified, which makes them useful for cosmetic purposes. There is a reason why Vicks Vaporub is not recommended for children under the age of three.
But this restriction no doubt has more to do with the isolates (such as menthol) that you find in Vicks Vaporub. Ultimately, the Vaseline is also a component of the baby-version – de Vicks Vaporub baby – and you have probably never stopped to think about this: in order to enable your baby to breathe more freely, you just rub this petroleum derivative on his skin. Rudolf! can be applied to the skin in all safety: the oils will take good care of it.
Mineral oil petroleum: Vicks Vaporub no positive influence on your skin, choose Rudolf!
And of course these purified by-products are submitted to testing and analysis before they can start a life in a cosmetic product. The government takes no risk when dealing with hygiene. Or do they? Because, if you are a frequent user of for example Vicks Vaporub, you are actually smearing petroleum derivatives on your skin. Admitted, petroleum is also oil. And oil is good for your skin. But petroleum is noticeably ‘further from’ your skin than herbal oil (the ones we use in Rudolf!). Mineral oils or petroleum are indeed occlusive agents: they seal your skin and form an impenetrable barrier on your skin.
Your skin is a living organism, it breathes, needs oxygen and moisture. Why is it that products like Vicks Vaporub are still present on the market? Good question: literature will tell you that Vaseline does not cause noteworthy skin problems. But no one says anything about whether it is good for your skin or not. Rudolf! is full of vegetable, biologically certified oils, of which we are proud to say they are very good for your skin.
Coconut oil in Rudolf! exceeds petroleum, better choose a vegetal oil instead of a Vaseline clone
Why is it that mineral oils do so well in cosmetic products? Easy: they’re very cheap, with an almost indefinite shelf life and funny enough, the skin doesn’t react too ‘unfriendly’ to them. You don’t get allergic reactions and it won’t aggravate your acne. It sound meagre though, especially if you know that such an oil will completely seal off your skin, attracts dirt instead of repelling it, blocks your pores and completely destroys your fluid balance.
It is quite a different effect than – let us say– coconut oil – which will protect your skin against a variety of enemies, and has a soothing and softening effect. A vegetal oil is also ‘related’ to your own skin. These oils will penetrate into the horny layer of the skin and thus insert the active components of your product. With Rudolf! it not just breathing more freely; you actually take care of your skin as well.
Mix coconut oil and carnauba wax in Rudolf! is no turpentine oil. Choose health instead of asthma or eczema
The ingredient list of a product such as Vicks Vaporub also shows the ingredient ‘turpentine oil’. The government allows the use of such product in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. Since it battles bacteria and fungi, it can be used for health issues. The doses in which this product is used, are however of great importance.
Someone who is exposed to large doses can experience headaches, nausea or dizziness. If exposed for a longer period of time to the terpenes in turpentine oil – say for years – he or she is likely to exhibit hypersensitivity. For instance, he or she can develop asthma or suffer from eczema. For this particular reason, the Netherlands have forbidden the use of turpentine in professional paints.
You will not find turpentine on the product label of Rudolf!. In this product, only organic and biologically certified ingredients have been used, the ones that do not damage your health.
Xylometazoline, a substance in among others Otrivin nose spray, promotes nose spray addiction. Switch to Rudolf!
A nose spray contains substances such as xylometazoline, tramazolinehydrochlorid, cortisone and oxylometazoline hydrochloride. These substances can promote addiction. How does that happen? Whenever your nose is clogged, the mucus membrane produces more mucus. A substance such as xylometazoline narrows the blood vessels in your nose which causes the extra mucus to flow better.
If you use a nose spray, for example Otrivin, for longer than 5 days, something strange happens: the blood vessels get used to that particular substance. Which causes them to spontaneously widen again as soon as you stop using it, even briefly. Your mucous membranes will immediately swell, which in turn causes your nose to clog again.
This reversion to the original situation, however slightly worse, is called the 'rebound-effect': the blood vessels widen even more and the mucus becomes even thicker than before you started using the nose spray. In addition, you get an even stronger feeling of congestion in your nose. Only solution is using a nose spray … a full blown addiction has set in.
Rudolf! will allow you to get rid of the nose spray addiction. How does it work? You buy 3 things: your usual nose spray, a bottle of physiological saline solution and a jar of Rudolf!. Mark the level of the content in the nose spray. Use your nose spray as you would normally do. Refill the bottle in the evening, using the saline solution.
The next day, use your nose spray as usual, refill in the evening using the saline solution. Gradually, you’ll notice that the nose spray is not doing the job as it used to, but you will also find you are not using it as frequently as before; at some point you are actually just using a nearly 100% saline solution. After a while, you automatically stop using the nose spray. Then switch to Rudolf!
Rudolf! does not contain any addictive ingredients. But you will become very fond of it, because it really helps.
