1 out of 2 fishes are caught illegally.
Just like bullfighting is and remains part of the Spanish culture, Spanish fishermen have predatory ideas about the sea and an amazing lack of respect for safeguarding different species of fish. Logbooks are fiddled, just 4 to 40% of fish caught are reported, the excess weight of overfull crates are not weighed and in Mauritania, Spanish fishing boats are not checked while the local fishing boats are controlled, etc.
The European Commission believes that 60% of the Spanish catch is not reported. The ICES thinks that 50% of the English cod catches are not reported. Nobody seems as yet to have the political courage to ensure that the rules are adhered to. That means that 1 out of 2 fish consumed in restaurants or purchased in supermarkets have been fished illegally!!! The whole food industry, sellers, purchasers for supermarkets, and processing companies plus the fishermen themselves, bear the responsibility for what happens at sea, either consciously or subconsciously. Eat less fish and the problem will solve itself.
