Alta Alella's vineyards at a unique location
Alta Alella's vineyards develop character because of their unique location The Alta Alella vineyards develop character through their unique location. The Alta Alella wines and cavas are located in the Alt Penedès wine region, not far from Barcelona where they also create excellent DO (Denominaciónes de Origen, indication for a Spanish high-quality wine). Josep Maria Pujol-Busquets and his wife Christina Guillen cultivate 3.3 ha. organic Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes there. They also co-own the famous Parxet wine house.
The vineyards at Can Genis are all planted on Sauló soil, one of the key distinguishing factors of Alella's wines. Sauló is an acidic, sandy soil with low limestone content, low organic matter and poor water retention.
The estate is just 2 km from the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean climate allows the grapes to naturally ripen for a longer time. The vineyards are situated on slopes and terraces between 150 and 300m altitude. 400 m above sea level it gets cooler at night, which gives the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir a good acidity which is ideally suited for sparkling wines. This, together with the unique vineyard terrain, gives the Alta Alella products their personality.
Each variety has been planted according to the orientation of the plot: The south facing slopes are planted with varieties destined for reds and sweet wines requiring higher ripeness levels, whilst the north facing slopes give aromatic and floral wines, ideal for the whites and cavas. There are currently 6 hectares of vineyards in production at Can Genis, with a further 6.5 hectares being planted. The red varieties planted are Pinot Noir, Syrah, Mataró and Cabernet Sauvignon, whilst the whites are Pansa Blanca, Chardonnay, Viogner and Sauvignon Blanc. The estate has been organically farmed from the outset, which is explained in detail here. Treatments are kept to a minimum using only sulphur, copper hydroxide, and surface treatments which do not penetrate the skins of the grapes or leave any form of residue. No herbicides, pesticides or inorganic fertilisers are used. Vineyards undergo green pruning and green harvesting (removal of excess grapes to achieve high quality levels - based on the relationship between grape quantity, leaf canopy area and available water). All grapes are hand picked using small boxes.
