Miranda Kerr is raising the popularity of coconut oil
Since model Miranda Kerr started publicising the fact that she uses coconut oil to keep her skin and hair healthy, sales of the product have risen dramatically. Miranda Kerr, wife of British actor Orlando Bloom, is a huge fan of coconut oil. She recently said 'I can't go for a day without coconut oil and use four dessert spoonfuls* in my salads, meals and green tea'. Sales of coconut oil have risen by fifty percent since she provided this beauty tip.
Coconut oil contains fatty acids that make the skin and hair soft and glossy. Fans of the product also claim that it helps you lose weight although not everyone is convinced. The oil, which comes from the fruit of ripe coconuts, can be drunk neat or used as a flavour enhancer when cooking. You can also put the liquid straight onto your hair or skin. 'The small molecular texture of coconut oil ensures that the skin can absorb it easily', says Kate Butler, an expert for Holland and Barrett. 'The skin absorbs the oil easily, it effectively 'melts' on the skin, and is also an excellent conditioner for hair.'
Everyone is convinced of the benefits of coconut oil: 'Coconuts contain a high concentration of lauric acid, a saturated fatty acid with an antiseptic effect. Bacteria and viruses are therefore given less of a chance to thrive', explains a food scientist.
*Miranda Kerr corrected this quote in the Herald Sun: "When it comes to coconut oil, I have found that I feel the benefits if I use 4 teaspoons (not dessert spoons) of coconut oil per day in salads and meals. Everyone is different and I find that coconut oil is the perfect, healthy replacement for other oils, both for frying and in daily meals."
